Higher Education Consulting

Julie Mitchell, M.A. has worked with diverse organizations, including Fortune 500 corporations, health care providers, law firms, research institutes and non-profits. Higher education has been the common thread throughout her career. Julie’s background, interests, life philosophy and purpose resonate with the mission of colleges and universities. She is an enthusiastic, lifelong teacher-learner.

Julie has embraced the multiple roles and distinct challenges of academic institutions. Because she has held full-time, part-time and consulting positions in virtually every corner of the campus, she has acquired a broad, integrated perspective. This allows her to identify opportunities and bridge differences. Julie’s experience includes over 20 years in the classroom, most recently as part-time faculty at Kent State University, where she earned superior teaching evaluations. She has taught numerous courses, including Interpersonal Communication, Business and Professional Communication, Public Speaking and Interviewing.

In addition to undergraduate and graduate teaching, Julie has been engaged as a consultant to facilitate important organizational change initiatives. She has led campus-wide learning and development programs, conferences, strategic planning retreats and seminars. She has delivered workshops for faculty on topics ranging from grant writing to collaborative academic relationships. She has advised human resources professionals and administrators, mentored graduate teaching assistants and coached student government leaders.

Julie understands traditional faculty roles in teaching, research and service. She has supported faculty growth at all career stages, coaching professors on opportunities within and beyond the academy. She sees the evolving higher education environment from a holistic, organizational development perspective. Her consulting is pragmatic and grounded in the latest, most relevant research. She assesses campus-wide, departmental, and individual resources to identify best practices and maximize results.

A successful entrepreneur and business owner for over 20 years, Julie’s leadership and management skills help her to address issues ranging from departmental organization and meeting management to stewardship of financial and human resources. She has implemented successful outreach projects, helping faculty or staff to reach beyond disciplinary, departmental or institutional boundaries.

Julie is a passionate advocate for excellence in higher education; her mission is to help leading institutions become even better. Her commitment to students led to designing innovative field learning experiences that have been adapted by other faculty. She has created courses (for academic credit), presented guest lectures, or developed customized seminars for numerous institutions, including the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Meredith College, Case Western Reserve University, Lake Erie College, Lakeland Community College and Cleveland State University.

Julie earned a bachelor’s degree with honors in communication from the University of Evansville, a master’s degree from the College of Communication and Information at Kent State University, and completed additional professional training or earned certification from leading organizations, including the Gestalt Institute of Cleveland. Her research-based graduate study in organizational communication included interdisciplinary coursework in education and business. She has presented her research or served as a panelist for academic conferences. Her thesis research was on midcareer professional women’s socialization into academic departments and full-time graduate study.
